A baler is a piece of equipment that compresses tons of material in large quantities, into bales which are very dense and designed to maximize shipping container weights. After a bale is compressed, it can be strapped with metal wire or plastic flat straps, and can be wrapped with plastic film. Depending on what is being baled, a bale can weigh anywhere from 800 lbs. (plastic) — 3,000 lbs. (metals).

Balers come in various shapes, weights and sizes; they are used in recycling facilities, distribution centers, and other industrial applications. They´re necessary components of a Material Recovery facility (MRF) such as Single Stream, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), and Energy Conversions (Front—end Waste to Energy & Others) Construction & Demolition (C&D) Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) eWaste, green waste and more.

There are two types of basic baler´s, vertical and horizontal balers. Vertical balers are designed to compress dry waste, such as cardboard, plastics, aluminum and paper; they´re usually manually fed and handle smaller capacities. The most common applications for a vertical baler include: retail stores, distribution plants or other industrial applications.

Horizontal balers are designed for continuous operation at high volumes. They´re automated and used in material recovery facilities. They can also bale waste (MSW) and are used in many applications, including baling document destruction, OCC, high paper grades, steal and plastic containers.

Baling material is beneficial to a MRF for various reasons. It provides a dense package which can be economically transported to recycling facilities. Providing a consistent cash flow for the owners, accurate material weight information, easier to transport, stack and handle. Benefits also include minimizing freight cost of the recycled material, as well as the residual trash. Removing recycled materials from the waste stream is also better for the environment, since the material will be diverted from landfills.
