When 2012 began, the Garden Grove Journal named Artistic Cosmetic Solutions in Orange County, CA as “Best of the West in Permanent Makeup.” The news came right before owner Dr. Laura Reed relocated her clinic to Idaho. “Winning this award was bittersweet,” she said. “I was touched when my practice won the Best Permanent Makeup Artist award last year, and I feel even more honored this year. I am fond of my patients and will really miss them.”
Shortly after receiving that award, Dr. Reed learned she passed her exams for board certification in permanent cosmetics. She earned the distinction of Fellow in the American Academy of Micropigmentation (FAAM) after passing nationally standardized written, oral, and practical examinations. “Since most states have no licensing requirements for permanent makeup, this credential is the closest thing because it sets uniform standards for knowledge and competency,” says Dr. Reed.
Later on, Dr. Reed received a plaque from the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals for the “Highest Score” of the Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional Examination in 2011. She could not attend the SPCP 2012 convention and receive the award in person due to reopening her office. “It was a complete surprise when I received the plaque“¦they [SPCP] did a great job keeping it a secret.”
As an advocate for public safety and education, Dr. Reed encourages consumers to find a cosmetic tattoo artist who is certified by one of the national non-profit societies. She explains, “Without licensing agencies or laws requiring standards for education and training in permanent cosmetics, the word ℠certified´ can mean anything.” She adds, “The credentials issued by the American Academy of Micropigmentation are Fellow (FAAM) or Diplomat (DAAM); the credential issued by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals is Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional (CPCP). Those are all recognized internationally as legitimate certifications obtained after passing standardized examinations. Anyone with the CPCP, FAAM, or DAAM certification has proven he/she has a thorough knowledge of permanent cosmetics and infection control standards.”
Dr. Reed is among few health care professionals nationwide specializing in micropigmentation. An artist and perfectionist, she performs all procedures herself using state-of-the-art digital equipment. Known for creating natural looking, flattering, and custom-designed permanent makeup, she has performed several thousand procedures with safe hypoallergenic pigments. Along with her reputation for painless procedures and strict infection control standards, she is chosen by those who carefully research their options. Many of her patients drive hundreds of miles and even fly from other states for their procedures.
