Dr. Jonathan Zaidan MD and Debbie Henry NP-C Collaborate to Provide Pelvic Pain Management at Women’s Excellence in Endometriosis near Rochester, MI
Endometriosis is a painful, sometimes disabling disease that attacks a woman´s reproductive tract and can ultimately lead to infertility and chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Dr. Jonathan Zaidan MD and Debbie Henry, NP-C, have collaborated to provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management for women with diagnosed endometriosis and those suffering from chronic pelvic pain (CPP).
Rochester, MI (PRWEB) January 18, 2013
For over a decade, Dr. Jonathan Zaidan MD has been treating women with endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Over those years, he has established himself as an expert in diagnosing and treating endometriosis. Dr. Zaidan has been trained and credentialed in the latest therapy to treat endometriosis: the minimally-invasive Da Vinci Robotic surgery. Robotic resection of endometriosis has given women who suffer with the disease a treatment that significantly improves their quality of life. The fact that the procedure is “minimally invasive” means that incisions are smaller, hospital stays shorter, and recovery time much quicker. According to Dr. Zaidan, “Robotic resection of endometriosis is the most advanced treatment for the disease and can even provide a surgical cure for some individuals”.
At Women´s Excellence in Endometriosis, the Da Vinci Robotic procedure to remove endometriosis is usually preceded by a 6-month course of Zoladex (goserelin) or Lupron (leuprolide) therapy. Both Zoladex and Lupron are classified as gonadotropin-releasing hormone superagonists (GnRH agonists). Both agents stimulate an overproduction of sex hormones resulting in the decrease of both estrogen and testosterone over time. The purpose of this therapy is to allow the body a rest from menstrual cycles and periods thought to cause endometriosis implants throughout the pelvic cavity. The therapy ultimately inhibits the production of estrogen, which is thought to “feed” the disease. Patients are usually required to commit to a monthly dosing of either therapy and are typically scheduled for the robotic procedure sometime after their 6th dose.
Although GnRH agonist therapy has shown to be effective in helping limit the progression of endometriosis, it is a difficult therapy for patients to tolerate due to all the menopausal side effects. “Patient compliance with therapy was becoming a huge issue. The first month is usually the worst and most patients abandon ship and then never make it to the final and most important treatment phase: the surgery. I knew I needed some help in supporting the patients during the medical therapy phase”, stated Dr. Zaidan. For this reason, Dr. Zaidan has collaborated with Debbie Henry, NP-C, to ensure patients complete a 6-month course of therapy and actually make it to the robotic procedure.
Debbie Henry, NP-C, was hired by Dr. Zaidan in 2008 and has been a major factor in the success of the endometriosis treatment at Women´s Excellence in Endometriosis, According Henry, “My job is to support these patients during their Zoladex or Lupron therapy physically and mentally”. According to Henry, most women experience significant menopausal side effects from the therapy and need support usually in the form of hormonal add-back therapy, anti-depressant therapy, and pain management. With the addition of Henry to Women´s Excellence in Endometriosis, most patients now successfully complete treatment and move on to the robotic procedure giving them a chance at the best possible outcome.
