Steve Brigance, founder of 4OurElders, said, “Nursing homes know exactly the things that can kill their patients; however, too many homes won’t tell anyone what they know or should know but don’t do. To make matters worse, regulators supposedly charged with overseeing what these owners do and making these homes safer either 1) do not know what to look or ask for, 2) do not know how or where to look for what they need to do their jobs or 3) do not care enough to even try to find out where the “hidden” dangers are.”
“What this means is that for far too many patients in far too many facilities around the country, the care and service they are receiving is subpar because it is in the hands of the very people, companies and regulators who are unable or unwilling to prevent catastrophic outcomes for their patients and their families. These videos answer questions such as: ‘How to spot hidden problems in a nursing home or assisted living center’, ‘What to look for when you need a nursing home or assisted living center for your loved one’, and ‘What sets 4OurElders apart from the “free” services available on the Internet.’ Based on its combined years of experience, 4OurElders knows there are many homes across America that do a good job for their patients and families. However, there are not nearly enough of them and it’s hard for the average consumer to distinguish them from those who do not measure up. While actively identifying and celebrating those really good homes, the main goal of 4OurElders is to use what is right in the elder care housing industry to make it even better and to address the many things that are wrong with the industry in an effort to bring it up to just a level of being good.
Two things that are so wrong with so many facilities are, inexplicably and inexcusably, poor care and service and poor regulation and oversight. Worse still, there is a total lack of transparency in that data critical to measuring care and service is either 1) not tracked at all, 2) if tracked, it is not retained, c) if tracked and retained, it is not shared voluntarily or even released to others entitled to it when required, 3) if it is tracked, retained. shared or released, it is not measured and, finally, 4) if it is tracked, retained, shared or released and even measured, it is not used to actually improve the care and service patients should and must have. Finally, and perhaps worst of all, there is a total lack of accountability to patients and families in thousands of homes across the country when things go horribly wrong.
