Restoration Local Offers Tips On The Use Of Bleach For Mold Remediation
Bleach has long been considered a treatment for mold. A mold remediation expert discourages its use and explains why other techniques are more effective.

Restoration Local, one of the leading providers of water damage restoration and mold removal service in the United States, is recommending that property owners refrain from using bleach to try and eradicate their mold problems. In the wake of record severe weather, this practice has been commonly accepted as a mold remediation solution. Unfortunately, it does not work.
Chlorine bleach does not kill mold“¦it simply bleaches it, taking away the color and leaving the actual growth behind. While it may kill bacteria and viruses, it is ineffective at killing mold because bleach is 99% water. Mold lives off of water and is perfectly capable of sustaining itself even when inundated with a bleaching treatment.
Even if bleach were even marginally effective, it often sits in warehouses, grocery shelves, or even in the home, meaning that its effectiveness may be diminished by as much as 50%. This is especially true for unopened containers within the first 90 days. Chlorine easily escapes through the plastic walls of the container.
Chlorine bleach also does not penetrate into porous materials such as drywall and wood. It stays on the surface, meaning that any mold growth within those pores will be unaffected, and perhaps even nourished as the water portion of the bleach solution seeps down into the pores. This is the main reason that after a few days, there will be a darker, more concentrated mold growth in the bleached area.
Chlorine bleach is also not registered with the EPA as an effective mold deterrent. There are no EPA registration numbers for killing mold on the label of any brand of chlorine bleach.
Chlorine bleach also produces gasses that may be harmful to humans or pets, even being known to cause pulmonary embolisms in low resistant and more susceptible people.
