Reduce The Risk of a Heart Attack: Participate in American Heart Month by Adding Berries to Your Menu

February 14, 2013

Market Fresh Fruit is joining in on celebrating American Heart Month in February with great news about berries and their power packed flavonoids, which actually help protect the heart and reduce the risk of a heart attack.

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) February 14, 2013

In support of Heart Health Month in February it’s important to remember that heart disease claims the lives of over half a million Americans each year according to the United States Presidential Proclamation. But three servings per day of berries can actually reduce hypertension by 10 percent as well as decrease the risk of a heart attack by 34 percent according to observational studies.

Many berries contain a heart protecting compound called Anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid, a class of compounds with antioxidant effects. Found naturally in a number of foods, anthocyanins are the pigments that give berries, red onions, kidney beans, pomegranates, and grapes their rich coloring. The American Heart Association put out a recent study on this of around 100,000 young to middle aged women. In an interview with cardiologist, Dr. George Porter, M.D., Ph.D, in Rochester’s Your News Now, Dr. Porter said, “The study showed that the blue coloring of the anthocyanins in blueberries and strawberries seemed to be protective.” He added that the compound relaxes the heart muscle, which is why the risk for a heart attack is reduced. “Stay away from processed foods and straight sugar,” Dr. Porter said.

Tom O’Connor, owner of Market Fresh Fruit | Eat Healthy at Work in Seattle, Washington, states that “even during winter, we can get our daily dose of anthocyanins from frozen berries.  Also remember that in addition to promoting heart health, berries also have anti-cancer effects and provide protection against diabetes and dementia.”
