Orange County Car Accident Lawyer Daniel C. Carlton Weighs In On Uptick In Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents
Irvine auto accident attorney Daniel C. Carlton said he wants to alert California motorists about an upsurge in number of deadly car accidents, and he detailed ways to protect the public.
Irvine, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2013
Orange County personal injury lawyer Daniel C. Carlton today said a reported increase in deadly car accidents in California and nationwide should spark more efforts to educate the public about safe driving habits.
Fatal car accidents increased nationwide last year for the first time in seven years, according to an article published in the Los Angeles Times on Feb. 20. In 2012, an estimated 36,200 people nationwide died in motor vehicle accidents. That’s 4.6 percent more or 1,600 more deaths compared to 2011, when a total of 34,600 people died in traffic accidents, according to a recent report published by the National Safety Council on Feb. 19.
“Too many people are dying on the roads,” said Carlton, a car accident lawyer in Irvine. “I’d like to see those numbers drop, and one way of saving lives is by educating people about the dangers of distracted driving. Parents and teachers should talk to teenagers about the hazards of texting while driving or drinking and driving.”
The increase in the number of motor vehicle deaths in 2012 marks the first time that figure went up since between 2004 and 2005, according to the National Safety Council.
Carlton offered a few tips parents and educators can give young people to avoid accidents:
- Don’t use the cell phone while driving. This includes talking on the cell phone or texting.
- Keep all distractions to an absolute minimum. Don’t fiddle with the radio or try to eat and drive.
- Never drink and drive. If you have been drinking, call your parents and ask for a ride.
- Keep plenty of distance between your car and the vehicle in front.
- Don’t exceed the speed limit and drive even slower than the speed limit if the weather or road conditions are bad.
- Make sure the vehicle is well maintained. This means checking tires, brakes and keeping up with regular oil changes and tune-ups.
- Consider taking a defensive driving class to learn how to be a responsible driver.
Statistics were not available for the number of estimated traffic fatalities in 2012 in California. As for 2011, a total of 2,791 people in California died in motor vehicle accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That figure is slighter higher than 2010, when 2,720 people died in motor vehicle accidents in California. But the previous three years, more than 3,000 people died each year in California motor vehicle accidents: 3,090 in 2009, 3,434 in 2008 and 3,995 in 2007, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The National Safety Council’s recent preliminary findings for 2012 nationwide also examined the estimated cost of motor vehicle deaths, injuries and property damage. Between 2011 and 2012, the financial impact for motor vehicle accidents increased by 5 percent to $276.6 billion in 2012. The NSC’s figure is based on wage and productivity losses, medical expenses, administrative expenses, employer costs and property damage.
Such a large figure came as no surprise to attorney Carlton. “The costs are staggering for families dealing with a serious auto accident and especially the loss of a loved one in a fatal car accident in California,” Carlton said. “It’s not just medical expenses or funeral expenses or the other short-term costs families must face. Years after an accident, many families struggle emotionally and financially due to the loss of the loved one. That’s not right. That’s why we fight so hard for the rights of families in California faced with sudden, unexpected death of a loved one in a car crash.”
