Florida Personal Injury Lawyer Larry Disparti Focuses on ‘Preventable’ Causes of TBI during Brain Injury Awareness Month

March 23, 2013

The Disparti Law Group, P.A., joins brain injury advocacy groups in pointing out that traumatic brain injury (TBI) often results from car crashes, slip-and-fall accidents, athletic events and playground incidents.

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) March 23, 2013

Florida personal injury attorney Larry Disparti said today that the observance of Brain Injury Awareness Month in March is an opportune time to reflect upon the fact that “traumatic brain injury,” or TBI, often results from preventable accidents.

“TBI can be severely disruptive to the victim´s life,” said Disparti, founder of the Disparti Law Group, P.A., a personal injury firm that serves accident and injury victims in across Florida, including those suffering from head and brain injuries.

“Unfortunately, this injury is commonly caused by such everyday events as a slip-and-fall, a tumble on the playground or athletic field or in a car accident,” Disparti said. “And the underlying cause, in many of these instances, is the negligence of another person.”

The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) observes March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. The BIAA is the country´s oldest and largest nationwide brain injury advocacy organization.

The BIAA says 1.7 million people, including 475,000 children, suffer a brain injury in the U.S. every year. In all, some 3.1 million people are living with a lifelong disability as a result of TBI.

The Brain Injury Association of Florida (BIAF) says 100,000 Florida residents suffer some kind of brain injury each year and 210,000 Floridians live with ongoing TBI.

A TBI is a blow, jolt or bump to the head or a penetrating wound that disrupts the normal function of the brain, the BIAA says. It may range from a mild concussion that the victim recovers from after a few days´ rest to a disabling wound that is the start of a lifelong disease.

“People slip and fall and hit their head because a shop owner has not cleaned up a spill in a timely manner, or someone suffers a devastating head wound because someone was texting while driving and caused a car accident,” Disparti said. “These are just a few examples of how negligence can lead to TBI and its associated medical costs.”

The BIIA says hospital-based acute rehab for a TBI costs about $8,000 a day on average. Post-acute residential rehabilitation can cost $850 to $2,500 per day. Even day treatment (four hours of therapy with no room and board) can cost $600 to $1,000, according to the BIIA.

Disparti urged victims of severe brain injuries caused by others´ negligence to seek counsel from a qualified personal injury lawyer.

“If another person´s careless acts have led one to suffer a serious and costly head and brain injury, that person — or their insurance company — should be held responsible for the costs, losses and pain and suffering they have caused,” Disparti said.
