Pradaxa Side Effects
Pradaxa was approved for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2012 to prevent strokes in people with a heart-rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation. According to a recent Bloomberg.com report, the FDA received reports of 542 deaths and 3,781 side-effect incidents tied to the drug in 2011.* One of the major issues with Pradaxa is the fact that there exists no readily available antidote for internal bleeding that can sometimes occur in patients treated with the drug. Dialysis can be used to remove Pradaxa from the blood stream. However, a study published last May in the journal, Neurology, found this treatment is risky and may not be administered in enough time to stop this potentially deadly Pradaxa side effect.** According to a recent QuarterWatch Report from the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices (ISMP), an analysis of hemorrhage cases reported to the FDA during the second quarter of 2012 found that Pradaxa bleeding is 5 times more likely to result in death compared to warfarin bleeding.***
According to Bloomberg.com, regulators in several countries have issued Pradaxa side effect alerts since the drug was first brought to market. Most recently, the FDA released a Drug Safety Communication announcing a new contraindication was being added to the Pradaxa label to warn against its use in patients with mechanical heart valves. The FDA acted after participants in a study who were treated with the blood thinner experienced more strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots forming on the mechanical heart valves compared to users of warfarin. There was also more bleeding reported in Pradaxa patients after valve surgery compared to those treated with warfarin, according to the agency.*****
Victims of serious Pradaxa side effects may be eligible to collect compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and more.
