Atlanta’s School for Learning Disabilities, Cumberland Academy of Georgia, Welcomed Sandy Springs Police Officers

Cumberland, Atlanta´s special needs school for high functioning Autism, Asperger´s, ADD, ADHD and other learning disabilities, welcomed several Sandy Springs police officers to the school to speak on social media safety.

Cumberland Academy of Georgia, a SACS CASI accredited, non-profit independent school for children with special needs, recently welcomed officers of the Sandy Springs Police Department to the school to discuss social media safety with the students. In addition to the school´s academic curriculum, the staff at the school strives to educate students about the social skills and practical life lessons. One of the most important lessons the students can learn is how to self-regulate social media.

Cumberland utilized the support of the local police department to reinforce appropriate and safe use of today´s technology. Sandy Springs Police officers spoke to students and teachers on appropriate language in postings and other social media skills. Cumberland students also learned about the huge ramifications of poor choices in writing and speaking amongst their peers.

“We are grateful for Sandy Springs Police Department to help our students understand the seriousness of social media,” said Debbi Scarborough, Founder of Cumberland Academy of Georgia. “Social media will be a constant in students´ lives, and we feel it is imperative students learn to utilize it with great respect.”

Cumberland Academy of Georgia is a SACS CASI accredited, non-profit independent school that is dedicated to educating students with special needs. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, Cumberland developed a social and life skill curriculum based on the special needs of the students. This includes helping students with self-awareness and self-monitoring on various levels.
