On April 5, 2013, Muscular Development reflects on the passing of Joe Weider, regarded as the father of body building and the founder of International Federation of Body Building and Fitness (IFBB), who created an empire of muscle magazines, fitness equipment, and dietary and pre-workout supplements.
Weider, a legend in the body building and fitness industry responsible for magazines, equipment, muscle-building contests and pre-workout supplements, died last month at age 93.
Known as “the Master Blaster,” Weider developed fitness equipment like the Solid Steel Tricep Bomber and food supplements like Dynamic Muscle Builder protein powder, Carbo Energizer Chewables, Performance Foods and Anabolic Mega-Paks, as reported by The New York Times.
Weider was responsible for many popular fitness magazines including Muscle and Fitness, FLEX, Men´s Fitness and, for women, Shape. Weider, along with his late brother, Ben, sponsored some of the biggest body building shows in the world including the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe contests. Weider “sought to combat popular images of body builders as muscle-bound oddballs,” according to The New York Times.
Brian Turner, representative of Muscular Development magazine, reflects on the passing of Joe Weider. “Weider truly was a visionary who revolutionized our industry. He had a hand in body building and fitness from the beginning, and helped develop the sport and lifestyle into what it is today.”
Turner adds that Weider´s influence on body building icons such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno forever changed the course of the industry. “Guys like Schwarzenegger and Ferrigno got their start from Joe Weider. Since then, body builders and fitness enthusiasts started buying everything from weights to creatine powders just to follow in their footsteps. Joe Weider touched millions within the industry and will be remembered as the father of modern body building, and he will be missed.”
