University of Maine Football Completes Ground-Breaking Team Leadership and Emotional Intelligence Training Program
University of Maine Football, an NCAA Division I and Colonial Athletic Association member, has successfully completed the Center for Cognitive Sports Performance℠s (CogSports) Leadership Training Program.

University of Maine Football, an NCAA Division I and Colonial Athletic Association member, has successfully completed the Center for Cognitive Sports Performance℠s (CogSports) Leadership Training Program. In conjunction with CogSports´ affiliate, the Maine Leadership Institute(MLI), Maine Football´s complete 70-man roster was assessed using MLI´s Leadership Evaluation Training Tool (LETT)® to measure each player´s emotional strengths and their mental and physical toughness. The LETT® assessment evaluates more than 20 different emotional intelligence attributes that measure self-leadership, coachability, mental durability, team leadership and team building.
The results of U. Maine´s LETT® assessments were then used to design a customized training program for the Black Bears that has as its foundation, the Stockdale Leadership Model. Named after Navy Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale, this model focuses on individual character, conduct and communication as the core of the Navy ethos. CogSports and MLI have adapted this model and created a complete training program that translates Stockdale to the world of sports. CogSports and MLI trainers led U. Maine Football through a series of team exercises that are designed to enhance resiliency, perseverance, decisiveness, emotional control and self-awareness. Each team member received individual coaching that focuses on personal integrity, listening skills, and stress management, all key factors in supporting a team culture.
According to U. Maine coach Jack Cosgrove “Cogsports and MLI have given us the foundation for our team ethos that is based on leadership and shared sacrifice. By training our players about the importance of these skills and how team members can improve them, it gives us the confidence to compete at a higher level and with a significant competitive edge. I know that we will continue to work with Cogsports and MLI to bring each new class of student athletes up to speed and build on this effort”.

About Navy Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale: The late Admiral Stockdale served in Vietnam and was shot down, captured and imprisoned for seven and a half years in Hoa Lo prison, the notorious “Hanoi Hilton”. Placed in solitary confinement, and tortured repeatedly by his captors, Stockdale developed a code of conduct and communication with his other officers that subsequently became the foundation of “Stockdale Leadership”. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1976 for his courageous service in Vietnam. After his death in 2005, the Navy re-named the Center for the Study of Professional Military Ethics (CSPME) at the U.S. Naval Academy, The Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.
