When It Comes to Sunscreens, Look for the Seal

July 3, 2013

There is now a simple and effective way to pick the best sunscreens for your skin type – just look for The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 03, 2013

Outdoor fun in the warm weather brings with it the ever-present risk of sunburn and the resulting signs of premature aging such as wrinkles and discoloration. But there is an even bigger risk of unprotected sun exposure: skin cancer.

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, people who have had more than five sunburns in their life double their risk for melanoma. The good news is there is now a simple and effective way to pick out the best sunscreen (which should be used all year long) – just look for The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.

To earn this coveted seal from The Skin Cancer Foundation, a sunscreen has to undergo a rigorous approval process that goes above and beyond FDA testing. A company has to provide scientific data that shows its products "aid in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin" while the sunscreen must demonstrate that it protects against UVB rays with an SPF of 15 or higher, has proper UVA protection, and does not cause irritation or an allergic reaction on 20 test subjects. The data is then reviewed by a committee of photobiologists, experts in studying the effect of ultraviolent radiation on the skin. For a product to get the seal as an "Active" sunscreen, it must also be shown to be water resistant.

"The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation is a great tool for people trying to find the best sun protection possible," says Paula Begoun, best-selling author of 18 books on skin care. "They’ll know they’re getting something that’s been through a rigorous testing process and will make a real impact in preventing sunburns, premature aging, and most importantly, skin cancer."

The Seattle-based cosmetics company Begoun founded, Paula’s Choice LLC, is proud that all seven of its skin care products with sun protection received the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. Begoun adds, "We strongly believe that everyone, no matter their skin type, should defend themselves from the sun’s harmful rays every day."
