Narconon Vista Bay Provides Kids with Drug Education at Watsonville’s National Night Out Event
The Narconon® anti-drug message is an important component for the annual National Night Out Against Crime event in this town that has struggled with gang violence.
(PRWEB) August 20, 2013
On Tuesday, August 6th, Watsonville police, emergency personnel, city officials and many others gathered at twenty locations across town for a combined show of support for anti-crime and anti-drug efforts. The National Night Out Against Crime is an annual event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, and is held the first Tuesday in August in hundreds of town across the US.
This year, more than 37 million people were expected to contribute to these events. In Watsonville, thousands of people showed up at these different locations. They were treated to cookouts, parades, amusements for children of all ages, and educational activities. Manning a drug prevention booth at the Green Valley Sheriff’s Department in Watsonville were staff and volunteers from Narconon Vista Bay, a residential drug rehabilitation facility located nearby.
"It is part of our mission to prevent drug abuse by youth, in addition to rehabilitating the addicted," said Alex Matthews of Narconon Vista Bay. "When drug education is done well, our youth won’t need drug rehabilitation when they get older." Narconon staff at the booth handed out free educational materials and enlisted the commitments of children to staying drug-free. More than a hundred children signed a large pledge board with a promise to stay sober.
When they were not at the booth, Narconon staff and volunteers also helped worked the barbecue, ran carnival games and monitored activity at the bouncy houses.
"Gang violence and drugs very often go hand in hand," added Matthews. "Watsonville has suffered enough from gang violence recently. We have been very happy to add our efforts to the drive to make our town safe and drug-free through these National Night Out events over the last three years."
