Lyme Research Alliance to Hold 2nd Annual Lyme Disease Awareness Night & Cocktail Reception

September 10, 2013

"What You Need to Know About Lyme Disease—Now!" will also address new challenges being posed by tick-borne co-infections and the emerging Powassan virus threat.

Stamford, CT (PRWEB) September 10, 2013

With the number of Lyme and other tick-borne disease cases increasing in the Northeast, Lyme Research Alliance (LRA) will host its second annual Lyme Disease Awareness Night and Cocktail Reception on Wednesday, September 25 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m at Mercedes-Benz of White Plains. Proceeds will go to fund research and ultimately a cure for Lyme and other debilitating tick-borne diseases.

The event, titled "What You Need to Know About Lyme Disease—Now!," will brief attendees on the tools they need to fight back against the silent epidemic of Lyme and the added challenges now being posed by co-infections and new tick-borne diseases like the Powassan virus. This comes at a time when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a new estimate of 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease each year revised upward from the previous official number of only 30,000 cases.

Featured speakers will be Kenneth Liegner, M.D., a Pawling, NY internist who has been actively involved in the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and related disorders for 25 years. Dr. Liegner will discuss Lyme and tick-borne co-infections from a clinician's perspective. Also speaking will be Lyme researcher Kim Lewis, Ph.D., of Boston’s Northeastern University who will discuss the future of Lyme medicine and what new treatments Lyme sufferers can expect to see coming out of the research lab in the near future.

Preceding the talks, guests will enjoy a cocktail reception featuring champagne, wine, hors d’oeuvres and a tasting bar by Tito’s Hand-Made Vodka. Vintage Mercedes from the Pepe Auto Group’s collection will also be on display.

"We couldn’t be more thrilled to offer this event, especially after the CDC’s dramatic news about the tenfold increase in estimated Lyme disease cases," said Peter Wild, LRA’s executive director. "Lyme is a significant public health concern and we feel it’s vitally important for residents in the Northeast to know how to stay safe in their own backyards. We are grateful to Pepe Auto Group and Mercedes-Benz of White Plains for making this evening possible and for their support of our cause."

In addition to Pepe Auto Group and Mercedes-Benz of White Plains, sponsors for this year's event include Today Media (Westchester Magazine and 914Inc.), Cumulus Westchester AM and FM stations, and Tito’s Vodka. The suggested donation is $25. For details and online registration: http://www.LymeResearchAlliance.org.
