Health organizations have designated January as Thyroid Awareness Month to make sure that people are aware of the importance the thyroid plays in their health. The thyroid gland has an effect of nearly every metabolic process in the body and disorders affecting the thyroid can negatively affect a person's health in a variety of ways. Request A Test offers a variety of thyroid tests that anyone can order without having to first schedule a doctor's appointment or get approval from an insurance provider. Popular tests like TSH, T4, T3, Free T4 and Free T3 as well as many others are available individually or in a number of cost saving packages like the Thyroid Basic Panel with TSH or the Thyroid Comprehensive Panel with Free. With quick and convenient ordering and 1000's of lab locations across the country to choose from, Request A Test makes it easy for anyone to get the testing they need whenever they need it.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland found in the neck. When the body's levels of thyroid hormones are low, the pituitary gland produces a hormone known as Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH. TSH in turn stimulates the thyroid to produce the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The thyroid produces T3 and T4 using iodine in the blood. T3 and T4 help to control the body's metabolism. Thyroid tests are usually used to monitor the levels of different hormone to make sure that the thyroid is functioning properly.

Since a healthy thyroid is a key contributor to overall health, many people receive periodic testing to make sure their thyroid is functioning properly. Thyroid testing can also be a good place to start when someone is experiencing symptoms which are commonly associated with thyroid disorders. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) typically causes symptoms such as anxiety, rapid heart rate, fatigue, insomnia, tremors, and sudden weight loss. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) may cause symptoms such as fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, and weight gain. Typically, thyroid tests start by measuring TSH and T4 and sometimes T3 as well. Most of the T3 and T4 in the body is bound to proteins which carry the hormones through the bloodstream. The portion of the hormones that are unbound are known as Free T3 and Free T4. Some people prefer to measure the free levels rather than the total T3 and T4 as this will provide a measurement of how much T3 and T4 is actually available to be used by the body's cells. If a person shows irregular thyroid hormone levels, there are other tests which can help to determine the cause. Measuring Iodine levels in the blood or urine can help to see if a deficiency is preventing the thyroid from producing hormones at healthy levels. A Thyroxine-Binding Globulin test measures the primary protein that carries T3 and T4 through the body. There are also tests which look for the presence of antibodies which can indicate a thyroid autoimmune disorder. A Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies and Antithyroglobulin Antibodies test can detect if the body is producing antibodies which mistakenly attack the thyroid gland. Depending on the results of a person's blood tests, their doctor may recommend additional testing to help confirm a diagnosis or determine the best course of treatment.

"Request A Test wants everyone to be aware of how important healthy thyroid function is," says Noelle Perez, founder and president of Request A Test. "We hope this discount gives our customers a chance to pay some extra attention to their thyroid health as they start the new year."
