Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Brooklyn pediatric care center, responds to an article published on February 16 by Philly.com, which urges parents to teach their children heart-healthy lessons as early as possible.
According to the February 16 article published by Philly.com titled “Start Heart-Healthy Lessons in Childhood, Expert Says,” teaching children about heart health early on in life will benefit them in their older years.
Dr. Susan Haynes, an assistant professor in the cardiology division at Saint Louis University, says getting children heart healthy begins with engaging them in physical activity and limiting “screen time” in front of electronic devices and televisions. “Kids between ages 2 and 5 should have no more than one to two hours of screen time a day,” she says. “Young children who are physically active are more likely to continue being active as they age.”
The article also states that an infant’s diet can also significantly influence their heart-healthy eating habits later on in life.
Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Brooklyn pediatric care center, says proactivity is key to instilling these heart health-conscious benefits into children. “It’s important, as parents, that you are aware of any family health risks, that you make good healthy choices not only for yourself but for your children as well and that you are proactive with teaching your children heart-healthy habits as early as possible.”
