CSP Today: Namibia Evaluating Concentrated Solar Power Potential in Feasibility Study

February 26, 2014

Namibian utility NamPower is the implementing agent for the execution of a new feasibility study to establish a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant with storage in the country.

London , UK (PRWEB) February 26, 2014

NamPower and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) are working on the feasibility of a CSP plant of at least 50 MW with storage. The final plant specifications will be confirmed through the feasibility study. As Margaret Mutschler, Head of Generation Projects at NamPower recently told CSP Today, “We are working very hard to determine the optimal CSP solutions for Namibia.”

From a resource perspective Namibia has great potential for concentrated solar power. “The best Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) in Spain is about 2100 kWh/m²/a. In Namibia, the best DNI is 3000 kWh/m²/a and the worst about 2200 kWh/m²/a”, said Riaan Meyer, CEO at GeoSun Africa.

The CSP project, earlier approved by the Cabinet and partially funded by the United Nations Development Programme has the objective to increase the share of renewable energy resources in the Namibian energy mix by developing the necessary technological structure and environment for the successful transmission and deployment of CSP for on-grid power generation.

NamPower official representatives will be present at CSP Today South Africa 2014 (8th – 9th April, Cape Town) where attendees will have the chance to meet and network with them. Official representatives from the Department of Energy in Botswana and the Department of Energy in South Africa will be presenting their CSP roadmap in their respective countries.
