Lipitor Lawsuit News: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comments on Pfizer, Inc. Move to Test Over-the-Counter Version of Lipitor

March 3, 2014

The Firm is investigating Lipitor lawsuits on behalf of individuals who allegedly developed new-onset Type 2 diabetes due to their use of Lipitor.

New York, New York (PRWEB) March 03, 2014

As Lipitor lawsuits (http://www.thelipitorlawsuit.com/ ) alleging use of the popular cholesterol-lowering medication continue to move forward in federal court, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that Pfizer, Inc. recently launched a clinical trial of an over-the-counter (OTC) version of Lipitor. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Pfizer lost patent protection for Lipitor in 2011, and introducing an OTC version of the drug could allow the company to reclaim some of its market share. Among other things, the Journal reported that the goal of the clinical trial, which began last October, is to determine whether patients would be able to correctly use an OTC version of Lipitor, and monitor themselves for side effects associated with its use.*

“Dozens of lawsuits that allege a connection between the use of Lipitor and diabetes are currently making their way through U.S. courts. This growing litigation is a reminder that even an over-the-counter version Lipitor may be associated with some serious side effects, including diabetes,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free Lipitor lawsuit consultations to anyone who may have developed Type 2 diabetes due to the use of this statin medication.

Lipitor Diabetes Allegations

Lipitor, which was brought to market in 1996, is a statin drug used to treat high cholesterol. In January 2012, a study published in JAMA: Internal Medicine reported that post-menopausal women who take Lipitor may be at an increased risk for developing diabetes.** The following month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the manufacturer of Lipitor to add new warnings to its label regarding this potential risk.

Since then, Lipitor lawsuits that claim the use of the medication caused patients to develop Type 2 diabetes have mounted in courts around the county. On February 18, 2014, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all federal Lipitor diabetes claims in a multidistrict litigation and transferred the cases to the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina for coordinated pretrial proceedings. All of the Lipitor lawsuits pending in the multidistrict litigation claim that Pfizer failed to adequately warn patients and doctors about the link between Lipitor and diabetes, and negligently marketed the medication despite its knowledge of this danger. Alleged victims of Lipitor and diabetes may be entitled to compensation from Pfizer for their injury-related damages. Learn more about filing a Lipitor lawsuit at Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website. To arrange for a free legal review, please call 800-511-5092.
