The Discovery House Donates $5,000 to Bertrand Elementary School
Residential rehab center helps fund Reseda school's literacy program.
Reseda, CA (PRWEB) March 03, 2014
The Discovery House is pleased to announce that it has donated $5,000 to Bertrand Elementary School for the support of its literacy program. Principal Esta Herman of Bertrand Elementary accepted the donation on behalf of the school, and she and her staff are looking forward to seeing the results from the literacy program they will implement with the funds.
The school will use the money to fund a literacy program, Accelerated Reader, which helps students develop independent reading skills. The program will help monitor students' progress toward college and career readiness, will guide independent reading, and will increase parental support. Incentives help increase students' participation in the program and foster a love for reading.
The Accelerated Reader literacy program is designed to help students not only succeed in school, but set the foundation for a successful life. According to the Accelerated Reading website, http://www.renlearn.com/ar/, "Reading transports curious minds to wondrous realms of the imagination. It determines success not only in the classroom, but in life."
Tom Whiting, Co-founder and Executive Director of The Discovery House, is pleased to support Bertrand's literacy program. "We believe that a good education is an important factor in the long term prevention of drug and alcohol abuse. We hope that through the tools this literacy program provides, Bertrand students will be able to excel not only in school, but also in life. Our goal is to help individuals create a better future."
Whiting points to statistics from SAMHSA that show an increase in substance abuse among teens that drop out of high school. SAMHSA states that "twelfth grade aged youths who drop out of school are more likely than similarly aged youths who are still in school to engage in current cigarette use, alcohol use, binge alcohol use, marijuana use, nonmedical use of psychotherapeutic drugs, and use of any illicit drugs."
The Discovery House is a residential treatment center that offers hope to those struggling with drug or alcohol abuse disorders. The California treatment center helps individuals heal their entire being, body, mind, and spirit, so that they can live a productive and healthy life.
