Drug and Alcohol Rehab Volunteers at Victims of Abuse Awareness Event
The Discovery House, a Participant in Fundraiser for "Victory for Victims"
RESEDA, CA (PRWEB) May 06, 2014
The Discovery House is pleased to announce its participation in the "Victory for Victims" event. The event was a 5K walk/run and 10K river run that raised funds for victims of abuse. The race was held April 13, 2014, at Lake Balboa Park, Encino, California.
The event was the official cool-down race of the 2014 Asics LA Marathon, and welcomed individuals and groups dedicated to helping victims of abuse. The goal of the race was to “Break the Silence and Stop the Abuse,” and support programs serving victims of sexual abuse and assault. Festivities, such as a Health and Fitness Expo, Cool Down Lounge, karate demonstrations and balloons in the Kids Fun Zone, and food and drink, made the event fun for the whole family. Olympic decathlon legend, Rafer Johnson, participated in the event by presenting winning medals and meeting with participants.
Proceeds from the Victory for Victims event benefited the Center for Assault Treatment Services (CATS), located at Northridge Hospital Medical Center in the San Fernando Valley. According to its website, "CATS provides medical evidentiary exams and forensic interviews. CATS partners with the Valley Trauma Center to provide on-site case management and referrals to victims of all ages. Since 1997, CATS has provided critically needed services to 12,000 victims of sexual abuse and sexual assault to help them begin the process of healing and recovery!" Outpatient volunteers from The Discovery House helped out at the event, by manning water stations along the run. Staff and clients at The Discovery House were thrilled to be a part of the event and to help raise funds for its cause. Tom Whiting, founder of The Discovery House, knows the importance of providing help to abuse victims.
"Victory for Victims means so much to us at The Discovery House," Tom said. "The trauma and pain that result from abuse and assault can lead to a host of other issues. Many individuals that struggle with drug addiction and alcoholism were once victims of sexual assault and abuse, and are still haunted by the experience, even decades later. The Center for Assault Treatment Services helps victims heal from traumatic events, so that they can live a healthy and happy life once again."
The Discovery House, which is located in the San Fernando Valley, offers residential treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. The treatment center uses client-based treatment programs to address the underlying causes of addiction, and helps individuals succeed on their journey to recovery.
