Bleeding gums are not to be ignored as simply the cause of rough brushing or flossing, according to the prosthodontists at the Anacapa Dental Art Institute.
While bleeding gums can be cause by some serious medical conditions, Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad most frequently see them caused by gingivitis.
“If you are not properly cleaning your teeth all the way down below the gum line, you gums will become inflamed and bleed easily,” Dr. Jivraj said.
Despite their reputations for building beautiful smiles, Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad do far more than cosmetic dental procedures. As prosthodontists, they are experts in replacing teeth – which can be required if gum disease is left unchecked.
Good oral hygiene is the best way to prevent gum disease, and the best way to get in the habit of keeping good oral hygiene is to learn it when you are young.
Dr. Jivraj recently wrote a blog post about helping children avoid gum disease, and in it he offered these four tips:
1. Parents should brush children’s teeth after they have brushed themselves. This helps the children learn to brush their teeth without sacrificing their cleanliness.
2. Parents should not let children eat or drink anything other than water right before bed. If children eat or drink before bed without brushing their teeth, bacteria will build up around the food and sugars left on their teeth.
3. Parents should feed their kids hard, crunchy foods like carrots, apples and celery. These foods cause the mouth to produce more saliva, which is a natural bacteria fighter.
4. Parents should not skip pediatric dental appointments. The dentist and dental hygienist are best equipped to find and remove any plaque buildup that has started.
