Henin Advances at Australian Open

Four Top 10-seeded women won third-round matches Friday at the Australian Open with only No. 3 Jelena Jankovic pushed to a third set.

World No. 1 Justine Henin, No. 5 Maria Sharapova and seventh-seeded Serena Williams joined Jankovic in advancing to the fourth round but were much more solid in their play than Jankovic.

For the second time in three Australian Open matches — she had to battle through a 22-game third set in the first round — Jankovic had trouble, admitting she lost her concentration and was tired in the second set before taking a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Virginie Razzano.

She made the fourth round, however, and will go against local favorite Casey Dellacqua, who upset 18th-seeded Amelie Mauresmo, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, on Friday.

Henin advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Francesca Schiavone while Sharapova, playing as if on a mission, routed Elena Vesnina, 6-3, 6-0. If Henin and Sharapova both win the fourth round, they would square off in the tournament quarterfinals.

Williams was workmanlike in her 6-3, 6-4 win over Victoria Azarenka. The defending champion moved into a rematch of her 2007 Australian Open semifinal against 12-seeded Nicole Vaidisova, who beat Ai Sugiyama, 6-3, 6-4 Friday.

Also in third-round play, No. 11-seeded Elena Dementieva roared through a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shahar Peer and goes against Sharapova in the fourth round; and Su-Wei Hseih stopped Aravane Rezai and earned a fourth-round date with Henin.
