No Action Taken Against Indiana’s Sampson
Kelvin Sampson remained the men’s basketball coach at Indiana University Friday despite numerous alleged NCAA violations regarding telephone calls to recruits.
Earlier this week, after allegations that Sampson made calls to recruits when he had been banned from doing so, the coach denied lying to school or NCAA investigators.
The telephone call violations were similar to charges levied against Sampson when he was the coach at Oklahoma. That investigation ended with Sampson being handed the restrictions he allegedly violated at Indiana.
I really can’t prejudge what will happen, said Indiana University President Michael McRobbie at a Friday news conference. (But) these are serious allegations of misconduct.
The Indianapolis Star reported that if Athletic Director Rick Greenspan recommended that Sampson be fired, Sampson’s contract calls for a 10-day appeal process to challenge the termination.
His seven-year, $7.3 million contract expires in 2013. The Star said it allows the school to fire him with just cause and owe him nothing beyond the month he was terminated.
The Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal suggested Indiana consider rehiring recently resigned Texas Tech and former Indiana Coach Bob Knight if Sampson is fired.
