Wyoming Holds Caucuses in the Spotlight

Posted on: Saturday, 8 March 2008, 09:00 CST

The heated battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination takes stage Saturday in the Wyoming caucuses.

The Equality State, which has about 500,000 residents, is home to 59,130 registered Democrats and 136,000 Republicans, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Clinton is hoping to notch a victory in Wyoming after winning this week's pivotal primaries in Ohio and Texas. Obama, meanwhile, is seeking to increase his lead in the state-by-state race for delegates.

The tight race has thrust Wyoming Democrats into the national spotlight, attention they have not enjoyed since the state's delegates gave John F. Kennedy the delegates he needed for the 1960 Democratic nomination, the newspaper reported.

This year, presidential candidates have campaigned in Wyoming for the first time in nearly two decades. On Friday, Clinton and Obama both reportedly made two appearances. On Thursday, Former President Bill Clinton campaigned for his wife in the southeastern part of the state.

There is no front-runner in Wyoming because no polls were taken before the Democratic caucuses.
