Padres' Peavy Befuddles Dodgers in Complete-Game Victory

Posted on: Saturday, 5 April 2008, 21:00 CDT

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Jake Peavy tossed a complete-game two-hitter, as the San Diego Padres downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1, at Petco Park.

Peavy (2-0) allowed one run and struck out eight to pick up his first complete game since September 2, 2006 - a 7-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds - and the sixth of his career. Brian Giles, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Khalil Greene each had two hits for San Diego, with Kouzmanoff and Greene driving in a run apiece.

"I had to tell him (San Diego manager Bud Black) that i felt good, that i had something left," Peavy said. "We have the best closer (Trevor Hoffman) down there (in the bullpen), but I appreciate Buddy for showing the confidence in me and no disrespect to number 51."

Brad Penny (1-1) gave up four runs on 10 hits over six innings, while Joe Beimel and Ramon Troncoso combined for two scoreless innings in relief. Rafael Furcal tripled and James Loney doubled to account for the Dodgers two hits, both of which came in the fourth inning.

The Padres jumped on Penny early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Kouzmanoff, Greene and Josh Bard each had RBI singles, while Scott Hairston added a sacrifice fly as San Diego sent nine men to the plate in the frame.

"I thought the only thing in the first inning, he (Penny) got two strikes, but he left a couple of breaking balls up that hurt him," Los Angeles manager Joe Torre stated.

Meanwhile, Peavy was dominant on the mound, retiring the first nine batters he faced before Furcal tripled in the fourth. Furcal later scored when Russell Martin popped out to Bard in foul territory.

Peavy allowed only two base runners the rest of the way after the fourth.
