Olympic Torch Arrives in San Francisco; Protests of China's Rights Record Expected

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 April 2008, 09:00 CDT

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN FRANCISCO - The Olympic torch has touched down in San Francisco for its only North American stop.

Security concerns are high because of protests over the human rights record of China, the Olympics' 2008 host country.

San Francisco Olympic Torch Relay Committee spokesman David Perry says the flame arrived shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday and that it will be driven to an undisclosed San Francisco location.

Demonstrations are planned in the city against China's policies toward Tibet, Sudan and Myanmar. Activists Monday scaled the Golden Gate Bridge in protest.

No protesters were seen at the airport at the time of the torch's early morning landing.
