Update: Brown’s Demand on Zimbabwe Poll

GORDON Brown yesterday condemned “appalling” violence in the wake of Zimbabwe’s elections and demanded that the results be published immediately.

President Robert Mugabe is widely believed to have lost the poll two weeks ago but officials have refused to reveal the official figures.

Brown said: “The democratic rights of the Zimbabwean people have got to be respected.”

Hopes of neighbouring countries putting pressure on Mugabe faded yesterday as South Africa’s Thabo Mbeki met Mugabe and insisted that there was “no crisis” in Zimbabwe.
