Report: John Edwards Backing Obama

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 May 2008, 18:00 CDT

Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is jumping off the political fence and will endorse Sen. Barack Obama, CNN said.

Edwards -- a former North Carolina U.S. senator who was John Kerry's running mate on the 2004 Democratic ticket -- ended his second quest for the presidential nomination Jan. 30. He had won more than 20 pledged delegates to the party's Denver convention in August when he dropped out -- and could ask them to back Obama, CNN said.

In recent interviews, Edwards refused to endorse either Obama, D-Ill., or Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., saying he was unsure whether his endorsement would matter. Edwards had urged both remaining contenders to make ending poverty a central issue of the general election campaign.

The Chicago Tribune's political blog, The Swamp, said sources indicated Edwards will formally endorse Obama Wednesday night at a campaign appearance in Grand Rapids, Mich.
