Saudis to Bush: No Oil Production Increase

A top Bush administration official said Saudi Arabia has rejected the U.S. president's request to increase the kingdom's oil production to offset gas prices.

Stephen Hadley, U.S. President George Bush's national security adviser, said after Bush asked Saudi King Abdullah to increase the amount of oil on the market to help offset soaring gas prices in the United States that Saudi officials told Bush that their country is meeting the demands of its customers, The Washington Post reported Friday.

What they're saying to us is ... Saudi Arabia does not have customers that are making requests for oil that they are not able to satisfy, he said.

Hadley said the Saudis told Bush that gasoline prices in the United States wouldn't be dramatically affected by an increase in oil production in Saudi Arabia, which contains the world's largest oil reserves, increasing its oil production.

Bush previously appealed for Saudi Arabia to increase its oil production during a meeting with Abdullah in January.
