U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, in a South Dakota newspaper interview, invoked the name Friday of Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated during the 1968 campaign.
My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it, Clinton told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.
The campaign of Sen. Barack Obama immediately jumped on her statement, ABC News reported. Bill Burton, a spokesman, called it unfortunate.
Clinton spokeswoman Mo Elleithee said the New York Democrat was just giving examples of Democratic battles stretching into June.
Clinton made the comment while denying rumors that she is negotiating to be Obama's running mate.
This is part of an ongoing effort to end this before it's over, Clinton said. I sure don't think it's over.
