Jim Calhoun Treated for Skin Cancer

University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun has been treated for a form of skin cancer.

At a news conference in Storrs, Ct., Friday, Calhoun said he underwent a procedure on his upper right neck on May 6.

The cancer, a small portion of the salivary gland and 37 additional lymph nodes were removed.

Pathologic analysis of the removed tissue revealed that the cancer had been completely excised, and all the additional lymph nodes removed were free of cancer. I wanted to get an opportunity to let everyone know, I did have a little bit of a setback, but I’m going to fight through this, Calhoun, 66, said.

The Hall of Fame coach also had a cell of cancer removed from his right cheek in 2007 and in 2003 was treated for prostate cancer.

In 22 years at Connecticut, his record is 526-200 with national titles in 1999 and 2004.

He also coached 14 seasons at Northeastern.
