Rays’ Longoria Heads to Disabled List
St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) – The Tampa Bay Rays placed rookie third baseman Evan Longoria on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a fractured right wrist.
Longoria was hit by a pitch from Seattle Mariners closer J.J. Putz on Thursday which caused the injury.
The 22-year-old All-Star was hitting .278 with a team-best 22 home runs, 71 RBI, 27 doubles and a .533 slugging percentage in 104 games. He had not missed a contest this season since his major-league debut back on April 12.
To fill the roster spot, the Rays recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Durham. For the 26-year-old, it will be his fourth stint with the big club in 2008. He has batted a combined .290 with one homer, two RBI and a pair of doubles in 15 games.
