Rice Describes Poland As One of USA’s Best Friends

Text of report in English by Polish national independent news agency PAP

Warsaw, 20 August: Poland is one of the USA's best friends, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday after a meeting with President Lech Kaczynski.

Rice described the day on which the two sides were signing the deal on placing 10 missile defence interceptors in Poland as "a historic day".

The base will help deal with the new threats of the 21st century, with threats posed by missiles from such countries as Iran or North Korea. This is a purely defensive system which is not directed against anyone, Rice stressed.

The US Secretary of State stressed the system "was once again consolidating the strategic friendship between Poland and the US and deepening defence cooperation".

Poland is one of the USA's best friends and our allies as a NATO member, Rice said and thanked Poland for the deal on strategic cooperation in anti-missile shield.

She also thanked the Polish people and all Poles who believed this deal was significant.
