Tropical Storm Josephine Gets Stronger

Posted on: Thursday, 4 September 2008, 09:00 CDT

Tropical Storm Josephine intensified overnight over the central Atlantic Ocean, forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday.

The 10th named storm of the Atlantic storm season was about 465 miles west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands at 5 a.m., with sustained winds near 60 mph, the forecasters said. Josephine's winds extended 105 miles from the storm center.

The system was moving west-northwest near 10 mph and that motion was forecast to continue for two days, the report said. However, because of varying sea surface temperatures and upper atmosphere wind shear, fluctuations in strength were expected.

Josephine is trailing Hurricane Ike, a dangerous Category 4 storm that was about 550 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands at 5 a.m.
