Hospital officials in Galveston, Texas, say Jennifer Hernandez Ramirez became the first baby born on the island since Hurricane Ike hit.
The 7-pound, 8-ounce Jennifer was one of six babies born Monday by Caesarean section at the obstetrics branch of John Sealy Hospital, The (Galveston County) Daily News reported Tuesday.
The 15-bed maternity unit, which had been forced to close after last month's storm, was reopened Monday to care for high-risk pregnancies, the Daily News reported.
The six babies born Monday received certificates declaring them the first babies born on the Island since Ike, the Daily News reported, noting as many as 600 babies usually are born at John Sealy each month.
Mothers due to give birth since Ike hit have used obstetrics facilities in other parts of the region, the hospital said.
