Mother Indicted in Caylee's Death

Posted on: Tuesday, 14 October 2008, 21:00 CDT

The mother of Caylee Anthony was arrested Tuesday afternoon after being indicted in the missing Florida toddler's presumed death, authorities said.

Casey Anthony, 22, was indicted on seven charges, including first-degree murder, the Orlando Sentinel reported. She also faces counts of aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child, and four counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer.

The Orange County grand jury issued the indictment after listening to a half-dozen witnesses over a six-hour period, the Sentinel said. The witnesses included Anthony's father, George Anthony, and the lead investigator, Sheriff's Deputy Yuri Melich.

Anthony spent much of the day at her attorney's office in Kissimmee and was taken into custody about 5 p.m. when Orange County deputy sheriffs stopped the vehicle in which she was riding on the Beachline Expressway.

"The investigation contains intricate forensics that are on the cutting edge of science," State Attorney Lawson Lamar said after the indictment was unsealed. "We are used to complex forensics and are ready to manage this evidence at trial."

Caylee, 3, has been missing since mid-June, but her mother didn't call police to report she disappeared despite being urged to do so by family members. It was Caylee's grandmother, Cindy Anthony, who eventually reported the girl's disappearance.
