Mistrial Declared in Spears’s License Case
A mistrial has been declared in pop star Britney Spears’s driving without a valid license case, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge said.
Spears was charged with driving without a valid California license after she was involved in a minor accident in a Studio City parking lot last year. The pop music star isn’t facing any other charges as a result of the collision because she reached a civil settlement with the other party.
Spears’s attorney contended during her trial that the singer wasn’t required to carry a California license because she considers Louisiana her real home and had a valid license from there at the time of the accident.
The jury told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Steele Monday morning it hadn’t been able to reach a unanimous decision regarding the misdemeanor charge since deliberations began Friday, but Steele ordered the panelists to keep trying.
Usmagazine.com said Steele announced the mistrial Tuesday after the jury of eight men and four women again insisted they couldn’t all agree on whether the 26-year-old performer was guilty or not.
Spears faced up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.
Usmagazine.com said it wasn’t immediately clear whether Spears would be tried again on the charge.
