Advisers recommend pertussis boost for teenagers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. vaccine advisers recommended onThursday that teenagers get a booster shot of the whoopingcough vaccine to protect them from waning immunity.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, whichadvises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, saidthe booster shot should be added to the scheduled extra dose oftetanus and diphtheria that adolescents are supposed toreceive.

Two companies — GlaxoSmithKline Plc and Sanofi-AventisGroup, have U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approvedboosters.
