A New York Times reporter and photographer, following up on a story about lost boaters at Kennedy International Airport, were themselves picked up by police Wednesday.
Police spotted reporter Corey Kilgannon and photographer Librado Romero in a small boat in Jamaica Bay off runway 4R, said Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority, which runs the airport.
The Times workers, along with boat operator Lawrence Seaman, were "swiftly apprehended" by the Port Authority police marine unit and were being questioned, DiFulco said.
"They were operating within a safety and security zone established by the U.S. Coast Guard to safeguard critical port infrastructure and coastal facilities," he said.
No charges were immediately filed.
Times spokesman Toby Usnik said in an e-mail, "They have been detained while on assignment and we are cooperating with authorities to ensure their release."
Airport security was breached Sunday when three lost fishermen washed ashore and walked undetected for about a mile near a runway.
The incident was an embarrassment for the Port Authority, which vowed to increase security.
