A couple who sued a nearby hog farm over the smell it creates on their Kansas property has been awarded a $1.1 million settlement.
Ed and Ruth McEowen, who live near Stockton Lake, said the lawsuit was originally filed several years ago when the hog farm put up barns less than 1,000 feet from their home, the Kansas City Star reported Monday.
Night was always the worst,
Ed McEowen said. It's like the monsters come out at night. The sickening stench just lays down here in the valley once the sun goes down. You could never invite anybody over because you never knew how bad the stench was going to be.
The lawsuit named the owner of the barns, Dough Mullings, as well as the Missouri Farmers Association, North View Swine Co., Twi-County Swine and insurer Missouri Farm Bureau.
The McEowens said they will not hesitate to file another complaint if the smell problem is not dealt with properly.
