No Tsunami alert for Indian islands after quake

Posted on: Sunday, 24 July 2005, 12:42 CDT

PORT BLAIR, India (Reuters) - India's Andaman and Nicobar islands are not in danger of a tsunami after an earthquake hit the area on Sunday, the island chain's top federal administrator said.

"We have got reports from all inhabited islands through the police and there has been no casualties or damage," federal top administrator Ram Kapse told Reuters. "There has been no tsunami alert."

The U.S. Geological Survey earlier said the quake measuring 7.0 struck at 1542 GMT. It said the danger of tsunamis had passed if no such waves had been observed near the epicenter within an hour. Kapse was talking over an hour after the quake.
