Rapper 50 Cent, whose debut album was the year's bestseller, led all artists at Wednesday's Billboard Music Awards with six nominations, including album and artist of the year.
No Doubt, Evanescence and R. Kelly were among those set to perform during the awards show; "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was scheduled to oversee festivities at the MGM Grand hotel-casino.
50 Cent's "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" has sold more than six million copies, making it the top-selling album of the year. It spawned hits including "In da Club,""21 Questions," and "P.I.M.P."
The Eminem protege was vying for artist of the year against dancehall artist Sean Paul, Justin Timberlake and R. Kelly. Kelly also had a multiplatinum album with "Chocolate Factory," despite looming child pornography charges against him.
Beyonce, who made her solo debut apart from Destiny's Child this year, received nominations in five categories, including Hot 100 female artist and single of the year. Her hit "Crazy in Love" topped Billboard's Hot 100 for eight weeks. The R&B singer was scheduled to perform.
Sting was to receive the Century Award for creative achievement.
For the first time, the Billboard Awards were recognizing the sales of legally downloaded music tracks. "Crazy in Love" by Beyonce (featuring Jay-Z), "Where is the Love?" by Black Eyed Peas, "Clocks" by Coldplay and "Hey Ya!" by OutKast were up for digital track of the year.
Josh Groban, Norah Jones, Dave Matthews and Rod Stewart were nominated for the newly created category of Internet artist of the year.
The Billboard Awards honor the year's chart-topping artists. Winners are determined by the trade magazine's year-end chart listings, which are based on record sales and airplay.
The show was scheduled to be broadcast live on Fox, except on the West Coast.
