Celebrating the New Year can be a fun and memorable experience. Whether you are celebrating at home or traveling, it is important to be aware of potential dangers.

It is also a time for “New Year Resolutions” and what better resolution than to pledge to be safety conscious.

Here are some of the season’s most important safety tips to remember:

Fireworks: In some locations, fireworks are illegal. Fireworks are inherently dangerous and should be handled with extreme caution. Fireworks should be fired in open areas, such as a field or areas free of homes, buildings, power lines, etc. Keep people and pets at a safe distance. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand.

Candles: Use caution when burning candles. Keep open flames away from combustible materials such as curtains, paper, etc. Never leave lit candles unattended, extinguish them if you are going to leave them unattended.

Cooking: Kitchen fires are usually caused by unattended cooking. When using stoves, ovens and cooking appliances with open flames, users need to be cautious and not leave unattended. Have a fire extinguisher nearby.

Smoke Detectors: Be sure that smoke detectors are in working order. If you have not recently changed your smoke detector battery, it is important to do so. Smoke detectors should be located on every level of your home and in each bedroom.

Vehicle Safety: Do not drink and drive. Identify a designated driver. If you are not drinking and will be driving, it is important to have in your vehicle some essential safety equipment, such as a flashlight and first aid kit and fire extinguisher.

In addition to identifying these particular items, people also need to have “situational awareness”. Being aware of your surroundings is an important component of staying safe. If you foresee a potential dangerous situation, you can be proactive in making it safe.

Fire, Police and other Safety Officials nationwide remind you to Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011 right, and make a New Year’s Resolution for safety.
