North American-Based Disaster Recovery Firm Responds to Australian Flood

Ongoing flooding has left much of the Australian state of Queensland in despair. The month-long flooding is the worst Australia has experienced in decades. With initial cost estimates in the billions, this is anticipated to be the costliest disaster in their history, and is being dubbed “Australia’s Katrina.” U.S.-based disaster recovery company, Cotton Commercial USA, Inc. (Cotton), has activated their global arm for this operation, Cotton International, Inc., and is among the first recovery companies outside of Australia to respond. Cotton’s initial response team touched down in Brisbane on Monday and hit the ground running to establish the operational infrastructure needed for a disaster of this magnitude. Shortly after their arrival, the team established the Incident Command Center, set up a 24-hour call center, and secured local vendors and work crews. Team members include Cotton’s executive management, senior operations, logistics, procurement, and legal personnel. The second wave of Cotton responders arrived on Tuesday.
Australian team leader and CFO, Bryan Michalsky, reports, “We have identified the most affected areas, including riverfront properties in the business district of downtown Brisbane and outlying areas consisting of large industrial businesses. Beyond the city, many rural areas were severely inundated and we do not yet have a full grasp of the total aftermath there.” Cotton crews are now canvassing the properties to report the extent of the damage to their commercial clients. While current efforts are focused in Queensland, they are monitoring the situation in Victoria where evacuation efforts are still taking place. Preliminary plans are in place to set up a secondary command in the region if warranted.
As a comprehensive disaster response specialist, Cotton received early interest from humanitarian relief organizations, international insurance carriers and brokers, and domestic clients with Australian portfolio exposure. In response, Cotton developed a plan to undertake the significant demand for disaster recovery and humanitarian assistance. The initial response and relief is now underway. It prepares the path for the restoration, stabilization, and recovery efforts that will follow.
