Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) March 10, 2011
The Wall Street Journal reports on March 4, 2011 the FDA strengthens Topamax warning as medication significantly increases oral birth defects, including cleft lip and/or cleft palate, in children whose mothers took Topamax during pregnancy. In fact, this new data shows that expecting mothers who take the drug are 21.3 times more likely to give birth to infants with an oral birth defect such as cleft lips or palates compared to the risk in a background population of untreated women.
Since 1995 Topamax, manufactured by Ortho-McNeil a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has been available worldwide for the treatment of epilepsy. The drug was also approved by the FDA in August of 2004 to prevent migraines. At it’s peak Topamax brought in $2.7 billion in revenues in 2008 before it went generic in 2009. The company pleaded guilty last year to promoting Topamax for unapproved uses, paying an $81.5 million fine, U.S. vs Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical LLC, 10-CR-1047 U.S. District Court of Massachusetts (Boston). Between 2007 and 2010 about 32.3 million prescriptions have been dispensed to over 4 million patients.
