The Race is on to End Bacterial Meningitis

March 20, 2011

Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis, the annual 5K race founded by the Krizman family & close friends, is scheduled for April 30th and is aiming to put a stop to the deadly disease that took the life of 20-year old, Sierra Marie Krizman.

Loveland, CO (PRWEB) March 19, 2011

4 years ago this April, meningitis struck the Northern Colorado community when Sierra Krizman became ill with what she and her family thought was the flu. On April 10, 2007, the Krizman family’s worst nightmare came true. Sierra was hospitalized for what they now know was bacterial meningitis.

Jon Krizman, Sierra’s father said, “Little did we know, Sierra was dying from meningitis and we were losing her by the minute. I would give anything I own, including my life, to have had just an inkling of an idea what was happening to her little body at that hour in the morning of April 10th 2007″.

Meningitis is a disease that strikes with little warning and takes on the symptoms of a flu bug, stiff neck, sore throat and headache are what it hides behind before it kills or cripples you. The effects of bacterial meningitis include long and short-term neurological problems, amputation of limbs or death. It is crucial for this disease to be caught and treated early.

Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis has one mission: to prevent meningitis. With this mission, the annual 5K race was organized to raise funds to sponsor free vaccination clinics all over the state. To this day, Sierra’s foundation has vaccinated over 1100 people, thanks to all the support from the race.

This year, the race will be held on Saturday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m. and kicks off at Crossroads Church in Loveland. There will be great music, awesome give-a ““ways including 2 all inclusive Mexico Vacations, prizes, cool long-sleeved race shirts, and a special guest to start the race.

Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis is committed to preventing bacterial meningitis in our community, through raising awareness, educating the public, and providing free vaccinations. Through these commitments, the goal is to ultimately stop the spread of bacterial meningitis so no family or individual should have to endure the effects of this deadly, vaccine-preventable disease. “Lisa and I made a promise to each other, minutes after the doctor told us that Sierra was now in Heaven, that we would spend the rest of our lives reaching out and spreading the word about this deadly bacteria, so that we might save parents and families from the tragedy we find ourselves in; it is what we want”¦ it is what Sierra would want”.
