Tampa/St Petersburg/Clearwater, FL (PRWEB) May 18, 2011

The Prescription Addiction Radio Show – Breaking the Silence will be delving into the following question Sunday night May 22nd: How has the “opium epidemic of the 21st century” and the marketing of legal narcotics courtesy of the FDA continued to proliferate with the silence from the media and medical establishment.

The active ingredients that are included in OxyContin, Vicodin, Lorcet, Norco and Xanax are wreaking social and economic havoc for many in America, says show host Larry Golbom. The recent government DAWN report indicated that in 2009 nearly 4.6 million emergency room visits were connected to misuse or abuse of drugs, adverse reactions to drugs, or other drug related consequences (http://oas.samhsa.gov/2k10/DAWN034/EDHighlightsHTML.pdf). The report included oxycodone, hydrocodone and the benzodiazepines as being a part of the most commonly involved drugs.

The overdose deaths and increasing addiction rates are affecting many communities in America. The Florida Medical examiners report helps highlight the increasing deaths that include a prescription drug (http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/Content/getdoc/8a59bd00-c38d-4be1-ac06-715a273b552e/MEC-2010-Interim-Report.aspx).

The radio show will be discussing, in part, the controversial topic of what Golbom calls “The Ingenious Fairy Tale Marketing of Pain”. Using products for chronic pain that can be exchanged for heroin on the streets will be discussed by the guest panel. Heroin was banned from medicine in America in 1924 and the drug companies have since produced therapeutic equivalents to heroin in very large quantities. An estimated 3.7 billion oxycodone pills were produced in 2009 (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Florida-Pain-Clinic-Society-prnews-1090276669.html?x=0&.v=1). The term “Hillbilly Heroin” is an often used term (http://www.opiates.com/media/heroin-belleville.html).

On Sunday night, the radio show will include Dr. Steve Gelfand MD, a noted and published rheumatologist, Dr. Robert Ben Mitchell DO, an addiction specialist, and Steve Hayes, an attorney and former Director of a medical Detox facility. Larry Golbom, a pharmacist for over 30 years will lead the discussion. Phone lines will be open for comments – 866-826-1340.
