Peter Gros, a veteran wildlife expert and co-host of the original Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, will join International Expeditions’ October 14, 2011 Galapagos Islands expedition cruise as special guest lecturer.
Peter Gros is an active conservationist, and on behalf of Mutual of Omaha, is intimately involved in a nationwide conservation education program. Peter makes frequent appearances on LIVE with Regis and Kelly, the CBS Early Show and Tonight Show with Jay Leno to educate the public on endangered wildlife. Gros has nearly 30 years of field experience with captive wildlife, and has established breeding programs for endangered animals. Peter has also studied the effects of ecotourism on wildlife in Venezuela, Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico and the Galapagos Islands.
“In all my travels filming the natural world, I have found no place where one can come closer to wildlife than the Galapagos Islands,” said Gros. “For the person who loves nature, this journey is a dream come true.”
The world leader in authentic and engaging nature travel, IE is well known for providing high caliber guest lecturers such as Gros, who help deepen guests’ experience as they explore natural outposts such as the Galapagos Islands.
Mixing famed Galapagos landmarks and less-visited gems on the 10-day expedition cruise, the voyage explores the archipelago’s legendary beaches, lush highland forests and dormant volcanoes, a flourishing treasure trove of both terrestrial and marine animals. Along the way, Peter Gros’ lectures offer travelers a deeper understanding of this ecological wonder. His love for wildlife, snorkeling and hiking enrich his colorful narratives as he engages with guests throughout the journey.
Travelers spend seven nights of the journey aboard the 32-guest yacht M/V Evolution. Onboard, guests sail in comfort with spacious accommodations, fine cuisine and a host of amenities including an observation deck (perfect for whale watching) and canopied bar, plus complimentary snorkeling equipment, wetsuits and kayaks. The ship’s pangas (landing craft) are used several times a day to go easily ashore.
Colonies of blue-footed boobies, finches and sea lions can be spotted on the stunning beaches of Cerro Brujo, where the sand feels like flour between the toes. Kicker Rock, one of the most recognized ecological wonders of the Galapagos, juts more than 100 feet up from the ocean; and Española teems with waved albatrosses, Hood mockingbirds, brightly colored iguanas and lava lizards.
Exciting adventure awaits during this small-ship expedition, with visits to Santiago Island for fur seal, dolphin, shark and finch sightings; and Bartolomé Island, where guests can hike a dormant volcano for breathtaking views of surrounding islands. As the ship sails to Genovesa (Tower) Island, guests see one of the most diverse bird populations in the Galapagos, including red-footed boobies, short-eared owls, swallow-tailed gulls and red-billed tropicbirds.
In addition to hikes through lava fields and forests and snorkeling in crystal blue waters with sea lions and tortoises, other highlights include a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station and a panga ride through Black Turtle Cove, a pristine area of mangroves where travelers spot a host of marine life.
The unique opportunity to travel with Peter Gros on the October 14 Galapagos Islands cruise starts at $4,798 per person, double occupancy, and includes accommodations, Galapagos tax and transit fees, all excursions, all on-board meals, transfers and tips to porters and waiters for included meals.
