Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga will announce on Monday or Tuesday if Dave Wannstedt will remain Miami’s coach.

Huizenga said one reason for delaying the announcement is Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, even though the Dolphins are out of playoff contention.

“The game Sunday is important for a lot of other reasons,” Huizenga said Friday. “But as far as my decision? Win or lose, my decision is the same.”

Huizenga did not speak Friday with Wannstedt.

“In our last conversation, we agreed to talk Monday or Tuesday and we’ll talk about everything then,” Wannstedt said.

Team spokesman Harvey Greene had no further comment Saturday.

The Dolphins (9-6) missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1989. Wannstedt has a 40-23 record in four seasons, but only one playoff victory. One year is left on his contract.

Wannstedt joined the Dolphins in 1999 as an assistant under longtime friend Jimmy Johnson. Wannstedt took over in 2000, when the Dolphins won the AFC East. They finished second in 2001 and were eliminated from the postseason in the final week in 2002 at New England.
